An Exchange Between Two Poets
by
Richard Lance Williams
&
Stephanie Pope

he said,

of course i know
the tradition of
the unsmiling
japanese
nobility
but instead
i felt
the mask
as one
of resolute
resignation
to a world of men
(and women)

bondaged discipline...
...the mask, i mean, she said

this was inspired
by seeing, he said,
a japanese woman
all in black with black make-up
severe bangs
& chopped hair
at the base of her neck

the bondaged discipline
of a severe make-up
is always black, she added
every reign of terror lives...
I mean...every black rain lives
the torment of the veil nakedly...
She stammers (I don't know why)

every rain lives
in its own torment
a mercy
the black
veils
her sorrow
her breast
bare and hard
nigredo browns...

she pauses a bit...and
I'm lying when I told you
I don't know why...

...nigredo browns
the black torment
of human bondage:
wrists cuff
brown-skinned pain
under strain
the ache of arm
shackled
against black bars -dark bars,
are for
drinking in,
she said

nigredo browns where
combatant muscles are
fixed so tightly they
shake...is it strain or fear
or submissive resignation
the body held far too long
and wronged
far beyond
the gains of heaven
and the pain of hell...
dark bars...are
for drinking in
the descent of decent thinking
there is a
resolute resignation
thundering through the world
of men (and women)

i felt
the mask, he said

she said, i did too

all in black with black make-up...

black and white
she said while he went on

...of a lover
of a god
of an opening
to another world
another dimension
a vision
an epiphany...

a mercy hides in
these black, black vales
a black veils
and nigredo browns
pounds beatings that
violate the very sound
of mercy...
there was a pair
of ladies' panties, sheer
(appearing white in the photo
against the black bars, the
dark bars, she said again,
for drinking in)
and it violates the air
like you said
at the base of the neck
unsmiling, waiting like
in the lobby of a music school
how the gaze (you said)
voyeur, predator, prey
seeks rescue
seeks escape
or entrance
a magic passage
through the eyes
of another
into yourself

nigredo pounds
beating violates the very sound
of mercy but, I fear
I can hear that singing
in the background (like that sound
in the lobby of the music school
caught in the base of my neck)

He said,

how tiresome
it must become
being seen as a doorway
& not as heaven itself

you are right
(of course)
right as rain
and of course i knew
the tradition of
the unsmiling: BD
(bondage and discipline)
the unsmiling severe
make-up (sado masochism)
of course I knew the
doorway I was looking into
the resolute resignation to
a BDSM world of men (& women)
O, seek rescue, you said
seek escape or entrance
seek a magic passage
through the eyes of another...

...Medusa, Medusa
your sorrow, your breast I fear
because Athena wears you there
and this exchange between two poets
cannot help but hear your singing
indifferent to each thing
knowing of what lives
underneath us all.

Well done. I enjoyed reading this poem very much.

I found the words and the images thought provoking.

Thanks for posting this one.

What is the use of poetry if no one reads it or comments on it --
it just becomes idle words on a page.

Stephanie, I see why two people are credited with this write, but even though it is long in length, I enjoyed reading your poem. I should not be saying what I just said, because I too wrote a very long poem, just one so far. But Richard and you have indeed wrote a very entertaining read..........puddles1947....
