My Cat (Precious)
by William August Kobs

My cat is like a shadow
He follows me everywhere,
It doesn’t matter where I go
I know that he’ll be there.

He’s more than just a kitten
In the morning he wakes me up,
And follows me to the kitchen
Where I fix my coffee cup.

He sits with me at the table
While I read to him the news,
To understand, he seems most able
For he softly, gently mews.

When I go to take my bath
He hops up on the tub,
Or stretches out on the mat
As if he wants a rub.

Then he steals into my room
To watch me as I dress,
And he tries to paw the broom
When I’m sweeping up a mess.

He runs around the house in flight,
He likes to be fed at noon,
He sits beside the window at night
And talks to the man in the moon.

Sometimes he will jump in my lap
Or sit at my feet and beg,
Or pretend to be taking a nap
Then sneak up to bite my leg.

He thinks he’s using his paws
When he plays his little game,
But sometimes his sharp claws
Can cut deep into a vein.

At times he can be vicious
A rather mean, old bat,
But mostly he’s quite Precious
After all he is my cat.

What is the use of poetry if no one reads it or comments on it --
it just becomes idle words on a page.

Having had two pets, a cat and a dog, it was always fascinating to make out the big difference in those pets' ways and characters. I like your poem -- well then I like them all. Ursula
